Early Pioneers
James Miller was born June 10, 1778 in Mecklenberg County, NC, a son of Francis and Jane Miller. Francis was a Revolutionary Soldier and came with his sons, James and David from NC thru SC, TN and KY and settled in Greene County in 1821. James had married Mary Finley, a daughter of John and Mary Beavers Finley on September 25,1805 in Roane County, TN. They settled in what is now called Linder Township - Section 23 where they made their living as farmers. This writer, Nancy J. Miller, 2015 E. Jackson St., Bloomington, IL a g-g-g-granddaughter and Ray ant Lorene Miller, a g-g-grandson of James have visited the present owners of the homesite and they have stated that they located the foundation of a log cabin where it is believed the Millers had their original cabin. The Millers were members of the Providence Baptist Church near Carrollton and it appears that James had been a Trustee of that church before the time he died on October 20, 1851. It is believed that he never traveled far from his home. Mary remained on a portion of the farm with her unmarried daughter, Cynthia, until the time of her death , in August, 1871. A burial location has never been found for either of the senior Millers. Cynthia resided with her youngest brother, James and family who relocated into Montgtomery County around 1873 and then moved into Texas in 1882 where the family remained until their deaths. The order of births of the Children of James and Mary are John, 1807, Sarah who married John Nix was born in 1810; Cynthia born 1812; William McCabel born 1815 who married Esther Ann King; Henry D. Miller who married Mary Ann Cook was born in 1817; Elizabeth, born 1821 married Eli Witt; Lemuel Greene, born August 14, 1822, whom this writer descends from, married Lucinda Mahala Lee, a daughter of Archibald and Jane Upton Lee; and James, born August 1, 1826, married Eliza Kirby. Of these children, it is believed that each of them, except for John and Lemuel, moved into Dallas, Texas area in the mid-1800s. Early Pioneers

David Miller was born September 2, 1789, in Mecklenberg County, NC, a son of Francis and Jane Miller, Francis being a Revolutionary Soldier who was pensioned at the time of his death. David, his brother James and his parents all settled in Greene County around 1821 after having traveled through SC, TN, and KY. David volunteered in Gallatin County, IL for the War of 1812 and served three months; later volunteering in 1832 for the Black Hawk while living in Carrollton, served three months and honorably discharged. David later received a bounty land warrant for 80 acres of land in 1850 and applied again in 1855. The second marriage registered in Greene County was that of David with Mourning Donniho Finley, an adopted daughter of John and Mary Finley who had traveled with the Millers for many years. They were married on October 21, 1821. The children born to David and Mourning were: Francis, born 1823 who married Elizabeth Finely, they eventually died in Bond County, Illinois and are buried in Coffeen, Illinois; Margia Louisa was born in 1826, married William Martin Phillips and Mary, born 1830 who married William Odell. In July of 1842, David and his son, Francis were carrying mail for the U.S. Postal System from Carrollton to Carlinville, a distance of 31 miles. The postal records in the National Archives show that the post office at Greenfield was established on December 11, 1837 as NEW GREENFIELD with George W. Allen appointed Postmaster. Its name was changed to Greenfield on September 4, 1840. David and Mourning remained in Greenfield throughout their lives, with Francis and Jane Miller residing with them until their deaths. David died on January 19, 1871 and Mourning died on June 23, 1872. They are buried in Oakwood Cemetery with Francis and Jane Miller and 2 grandsons, children of Francis and Elizabeth Finley. A large family monument marks their graves and a Government headstone has also been placed for the Revolutionary Soldier.

Married Sept. 28, 1826 (Recorded Book 1 page 6; Greene County, Illinois Marriages) To: John Nix, born ca 1805 in Kentucky, a son of William Nix. She is named in her mother's will (1869). In 1840 they farmed in the Taylor Precinct of Greene County, Illinois but before 1850 they went to Texas and settled on a farm near Farmer ' s Branch, Dallas Dallas County, Texas. Here they reared their family. In aging years they lived with their daughter, Sarah E., wife of William Andrews, in Dallas County. They had at least 7 children:

Ray died at home on July 4th, 2001, 9:35PM of complications related to non-Hodgkins lymphoma (cancer). At his side were all his children with the exception of Frank who did not arrive in Bloomington until the 5th. Also present were his wife, Lorene and Nikki Adkins, the company of Joseph Miller.

This 4th of July was a warm, sunny day. Ray was laid to rest on another beautiful day, Saturday the 7th.
